Resources
Practical tools, guides, and professional support for individuals and families navigating faith transitions and changes in belief.
Understand What You're Going Through
Whether your beliefs are changing or someone you love is going through a shift, the first step is understanding the landscape.
Faith Crisis Landscape
A clear-eyed look at what a faith crisis actually looks like and the paths people commonly take. Not a script for how you should feel — just a map of the terrain so you can find where you are.
How to Make It Worse (And What to Do Instead)
Excommunication threats, organized shunning, public shaming, pressure campaigns through family — many people don't realize what's happening to them has a name. This checklist helps you recognize when a faith community's response has crossed a line.
Self-Assessment
Some people need a therapist, some could use a counselor or a coach. Others may need a good book or just a friend who gets it. Here are some tools to help figure out what you need based on your situation.
Is Therapy Right for Me?
An honest questionnaire that doesn't always lead to "yes, get a therapist." Helps you evaluate whether professional therapy, coaching, self-guided resources, or simply having someone to talk to is the right next step. Includes a scoring guide specific to faith crisis and changes in belief.
Emergency vs. Non-Emergency
A simple decision guide: Are you or someone you know in immediate danger? Is someone threatening you? This separates situations that need crisis intervention right now from the slower, harder work of rebuilding — and points you to the right place for each.
Find the Right Help
Finding a therapist, counselor, or coach who actually understands faith crisis is harder than it should be. We're working to make it easier.
Therapist, Counselor & Coach Finder
We're building a way to help you find a professional who has real experience with faith transitions and changes in belief — not someone who will push you in any direction, but someone who understands what you're dealing with. Search on your own or let us help you look.
Questions to Ask Before Your First Session
A one-page guide with the specific questions to ask a therapist before you commit. Things like: "Have you worked with clients in a faith transition?" and "Do you have a personal position on faith that would influence our work?" Takes the guesswork out of it.
Search Directories
These directories let you search for therapists by location, specialty, and insurance:
• Psychology Today Therapist Finder
• TherapistLocator.net
• Open Path Collective — reduced-fee therapy
Cost Getting in the Way?
The HRT Foundation offers therapy grants to qualifying individuals and families. Each grant helps with the cost of six sessions. Applications are reviewed monthly and all information is kept confidential.
Navigate Your Relationships
A faith crisis doesn't happen in isolation. The people closest to you are affected too — and how you handle those relationships matters as much as anything else.
Into the Unknown
Practical approaches for the conversations you're dreading — with your spouse, your parents, your church leaders. Whether you're the one whose beliefs are changing or the one being pushed out, there are better and worse ways to have these conversations. This guide covers both.
Curated Reading & Listening
A short, vetted list of books and podcasts that are actually helpful — not preachy in either direction. Curated by people who've been through this, not by an algorithm.
A Guide for the Other Side
A resource for the spouse, parent, or friend who didn't expect this. When someone you love is questioning their faith or being pushed out of their community, you may feel blindsided, scared, or angry. This guide is for you — not to fix anyone, but to help you understand what's happening and what actually helps.
